Siena and San Gimignano

Siena's most prosperous era pre-dated the Renaissance and consequently much of the fabric of the city is in the older Gothic and Romanesque styles. The Gothic and Romanesque Cathedral built in stunning black and white marble with a magnificent interior is a must see. The city is also home to an important religious center. As the birthplace of St Catherine, Siena has a church devoted to her worship. The 700-year-old university is still in operation, holding summer school in Italian. And the Piazza del Campo, sometimes overlooked by the giant campanile of the Palazzo Pubblico, is possibly the most complete Gothic piazza in Italy. Siena is probably most famous for its Palios, barebacked horse races. It has hosted a special event since the l4th Century … attracting crowds from all over the world. San Gimignano is situated in Tuscany just south of Florence. It served as an important relay point for pilgrims on the via Francigena to and from Rome. The patrician families, who controlled the city, built some 72 tower-houses (up to 50m high) as symbols of their wealth and power. Only 14 have survived, but San Gimignano has retained its feudal atmosphere and splendid appearance. 09.00 Departure - 19.00 Return

Pisa and Lucca

Located on the river Arno and just a few kilometers inland, Pisa is famous for its "Piazza dei Miracoli", with the Cathedral, the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery and the Camposanto. This monumental complex is one of the greatest examples of Romanesque architecture and sculpture. And Pisa, the capital city of the Province of Pisa, is one of the most beautiful places in Italy! Its splendid buildings, with their spacious layout, rise proudly from grass lawns and are surrounded by the Camposanto and crenellated walls. The tour continues to Lucca. This walled, ancient city is admirable not only for its architectural masterpieces - the Cathedral and the Church of San Frediano -- but also for its roads, buildings and squares. “Piazza del Mercato" has kept its original oval shape dating back to the days of the ancient Roman amphitheatre. 08.30 Departure - 19.00 Return

Tuscany Coast

This is a full-day tour of Maremma. It begins south of Livorno and forms a coastal plain running to the very southern end of Tuscany. Famous for cowboys (the butteri), Etruscans and naturally heated springs, this is the relatively undiscovered bit of Tuscany, featuring several large nature reserves, well-kept hill towns and countless Roman and Etruscan ruins.
This tour has several stops along the route. Talamone: This small town is dominated by the massive Sienese fortress (seat of the Museum of the Natural Park of Maremma) and surrounded by walls. It stands on the promontory in front of the sea. Porto Santo Stefano: The town is built on a terraced ground and is dominated by an impressive fortress, and Porto Ercole: Hercules is said to be the founder of this beautiful resort over Tyrrhenian Sea, dominated by a fortress and by the pure shapes of Forte Stella.
Orbetello: Located in the middle of the lagoon, between the Tombolo di Giannella and the Tombolo di Feniglia, Orbetello’s most noteworthy monuments are the Ximenes Fortress and the gothic cathedral - built on the ruins of a heathen temple. 08.00 Departure - 19.00 Return

Deruta and Cortona, great ceramic shopping

GREAT CERAMIC SHOPPING: Deruta is a picturesque hill town in the Province of Perugia, in the Umbria region of Italy. Long known as a center of refined majolica manufacturing, Deruta is still known for its ceramics, which are exported worldwide. With local clay great for ceramics, production began in the Early Middle Ages. The region reached its artistic peak in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Highly characteristic local styles, such as the "Bella Donna" plates with conventional portraits of beauties whose names appear on fluttering banderoles with flattering inscriptions are especially popular. In the 16th century Deruta produced the so-called "Rafaellesque' ware, decorated with fine arabesques and grottesche on a fine white background. Deruta produced some of the finest Italian majolica.
Cortona is one of the oldest cities in Tuscany and was founded by the Etruscans whose work can still be seen in the foundations of the town's massive stone walls. Made famous by Frances Mayes’ book, Under the Tuscan Sun, Cortona was a major seat of power during the medieval period, able to hold its own against larger towns like Siena and Arezzo. Its decline followed the defeat by Naples in 1409. The city was then sold to Florence and lost its autonomy.
A walk down Cortona’s narrow streets and alleyways take you back to the medieval period. Come explore the history of this little town and surrounding area. 09.00 Departure - 18.30 Return

Assisi, the town of St. Francis and Cortona

A trip to Assisi means a trip to very fine churches. The Basilica of San Francesco is the great monument to the Saint and built after he was canonized in 1228; it has frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Lorenzetti. Three more churches merit your attention: the Cattedrale di San Ruffino and the Basilica di Santa Chiara. The third church is the Basilica degli Angeli, built over and around the little chapel, the Porziuncola, where the angels visited St Francis. Besides its many churches, Assisi also has some fine secular buildings: there is a fine Piazza del Comune with a torre and a Palazzo del Comune, and a Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo.
